The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) is one of the most biologically diverse conservation areas of the Philippines. It was established primarily to protect the outstanding natural properties. It features spectacular limestone formations, lush old growth tropical forest, interesting wildlife, pristine white sand beaches and one of the most impressive cave systems in the world. The PPSRNP is designated a core area for the Palawan Biosphere Reserve. In recognition of its globally significant natural properties, it was inscribed to the List of World Heritage Sites. The main focus of the PPSRNP is an 8.2 km long underground river that is navigable up to 4.3 km. It is reputed to be the longest navigable underground river in the World.
Management of the Park falls under the scope of Republic Act No. 7586 or the National Integrated Protected Area Systems (NIPAS) Act of 1992, Republic Act No.7611 or the Strategic Environmental Plan (SEP) for Palawan Act of 1992 and of Republic Act No. 7160 or the Local Government Code of the Philippines Act of 1999.
Through the earnest efforts of Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn, protection, management, and development responsibilities for the PPSRNP was transferred from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to the City Government of Puerto Princesa on 1992. It has the distinction of being the first national park devolved and successfully managed by a Local Government Unit.
The PPSRNP has established itself as a premier ecotourism destination in the country. As a natural area, it has attracted an increasing number of hikers, students, photographers, wildlife watchers and nature lovers. It is a source of pride and a key element in the identity of the people of Puerto Princesa in particular and of the Philippines as a whole.
