Regional and Local Setting

The Park is found in the island-province of Palawan approximately 360 nautical miles south of Manila, the Philippine political and economic capital. It lies in the island's Midwestern coast facing the south china sea. It is located some 81 km north of Puerto Princesa City within portion of Barangays Cabayugan, Marufinas, and Tagabinet. Its geographic coordinates are 10' 10 north, 118' 55 south.

Palawan is a remnant of a land bridge that used to connect mainland Borneo to Luzon and the rest of the Philippines before being separated by the ocean millions of years ago. It served as a migratory route of ancient plants and animals. This explains why the plant and animal species of Palawan are more closely associated with those of Borneo than that of the Philippines. The isolation of the island later allowed the evolution of its own unique set of unique species, or the so-called endemics. The rate of endemism is high at around 13-15% for both plants and animals compared to the only 5-8% for the rest of the Philippines. This means that one out of ten species present in Palawan is unique and found nowhere else in the world.
